Corrections?
My son is 2.5 and isn't the most talkative kid. He has a good vocabulary, he just doesn't use it on his own very much. Understands what you tell him to do, (and even follows directions) and with flashcards/things you say, he'll parrot them back to you. He communicates well, just doesn't always use words (If that makes sense.) Either way, I don't really care, because I'm at home with him all day and we understand each other, so why complain?

Anyway, I didn't know if it should be something where I correct him when he's 'wrong' about words, or just let it slide. For example, he calls broccoli "Trees". He's always done this, and I thought it was cute (when I was little, I thought the florets looked like trees, too.) so I probably encouraged it. Now, I'm trying to get him to call it broccoli, and he'll copy the word and say it back to me (Though, sounds more like "Broc-lee", oh well. :P) but he'll point to them still and say "Tree".

It doesn't really matter much to me either way, but I didn't know when is the proper age to start really 'enforcing' vocabulary with a kid. Eventually, I know he's going to figure out for himself that trees and broccoli are very different (and there are other things he does this with, too, I'm just using this as an example.) and so I didn't know if I should be trying to explain the differences now and confuse the guy further, or just not even worry about it til he's older.

Picture help, please?
Hi everyone! This is sort of parenting related, mods feel free to delete if inappropriate.

I'm thinking about putting some breastfeeding pictures on my website (I'm a portrait photographer) and I'm wondering how you would feel if you saw these pictures on someone's site. Most likely they would go in the newborn or family sections. Would you feel they were appropriate, inappropriate, sweet, icky or offensive? If you didn't find them offensive, which one(s) would you like to see the most on someone's site? Thanks for any help!

Overload on toothpaste substitutes
I've been researching toothpaste substitutes...and I think my head is about to burst. Some say you should just use baking soda/salt/essential oil, some say that it's too abrasive and is bad for your teeth in the long run. Others say that tooth powder is the key, others say that chewing on olive oil based bar soap is the way to go, another says brushing with hydrogen peroxide gets you to the same place, and there's a ton of promotion for Himalayan Salt and tooth-friendly xylitol for sweetener.

I've ran into a few websites who all claim the same thing, and I know websites are just marketing materials so they're not going to have any bad notation on them. Because these are niche products, finding non-biased reviews is rare. I have no idea what to put in my mouth, or where to put my money.

Any help would be appreciated @_@.

yest infection options
I had a yeast infection two weeks ago (I have no idea how long I had it before that) and per my doctor tried the 3 day Monistat to see if it would clear up. Well it didn't and after swabbing me (ouch) and running the test she put me on a one-day antibiotic (it took a lot of debate back and forth between DH and I to decide this) and it got better, but I still don't think it's cleared up. I have no idea if I should call the doctor back or try something more natural. This seems like a pretty stubborn infection since the only other one I had (5 years ago) cleared up after the Monistat. It doesn't itch, but it's thicker than normal and smells a little off. Any advice?

30w2d
tomorrow i have my second appt with the midwife group (they deliver in hospital) i transferred to after seeing an OB for the first part of my pregnancy, attempting to transfer to the birth center & then being risked out there for depression / GERD / hiatal hernia.

i am very overweight. i have not been very active during this pregnancy since 9w.

i took the glucose screen at 25w prior to my attempt to transfer to the birth center, and passed it with great numbers.

at my first appt with the midwife, she did mention the possibility of having me take a *second* glucose screen after 30w if the baby seemed large or something. when she took my fundal height measurement at 28w3d i measured at 31w i think. but from what i hear, that's pretty normal. also i'm quite tall--i think i read somewhere that that plus being overweight can impact the measurement somehow?

i'm just wanting some advice on what i can say to decline the test that will cause the least unpleasantness for myself & them. i *hate* awkward situations. i worry the midwife won't be supportive of this decision since she was the one who suggested the second screen in the first place. it's true that i'm overweight and have not been regularly exercising, but i have not had any symptoms of GD to my knowledge and i *already passed the test once.*

just feeling really nervous & would like some support / coaching on what to say that is polite & won't somehow come back to haunt me. thanks.

The future of boob_nazis
Hello lovely lactating e-ladies. I am the Jewelz, formerly known as [info]white_tigress, LJer since '02 and LJ slacker since '07. I originally made this community as sort of a joke, but I was pleasantly surprised and excited when people actually started joining. Over the next few years, BN went through its ups and downs with several revamps and a few member list wipes before I got it down to a science. At one point it pretty much ran itself with minimal dramaz.

Then real life starting tea-bagging me and I just didn't have the time or desire to keep up with LJ anymore, particularly membership adds. I deleted most of my other comms but couldn't bring myself to delete this one because I (heart) boobies and I adore you gals so much. Had it not been for several other members, in particular the fabulous [info]mrs__smith for keeping up with the new members, this comm would have completely died out a year or two ago. Thank you all so much for continuing to be active and for not letting that happen.

Concerning Vertigo
I did try reviewing some of the past tagged posts, so if I had missed any related posts and if this is a repeat question/concern I do apologize.  About 3 weeks ago I was diagnosed with vertigo caused from an inner ear infection, with this they had given me antibiotics to clear up the ear infection, and Serc (sp?) to help with the dizzy feeling I have been experiencing, needless to say, I had finished up the antibiotics, and still experiencing the symptoms of vertigo, to the point I am nauseated.

Any suggestions other then rest (gotta love how the doctors just say, "get lots of sleep and take an advil and gravol", it will clear up on its own soon.) any suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I'm doing a follow up to my post the other day, mostly because there were so many responses!! Thank you for the information, I probably should have clarified. Right now I do use fleece in my cage and nothing else, but I was wondering if I could possibly switch to aspen. I don't use pine or cedar but I was just making the reference of yeah...wood shavings like those.

I use fleece with my spiny mice, and my chinchilla too! The only ones that get bedding of any kind are my hamsters, I used to use fleece or other things with them but...I find that it's not the greatest for odor control and they are now back on aspen shavings.

Looking for better odor control mostly. I do wash the bedding once a week.

I was just curious if there was a greener healthier way to dispose of the shavings. I don't want to add to any dump problems that there are already are. I would just like to know what I can do to use them more, or dispose of them that isn't harmful to the environment.

I have two ratties in my cage, My rex rat Slinky, and my little blue rat Marvolo.

I've been reading about composting and it still confuses me. (goes off to do even more research)

Sweet & Sticky Tempeh!
My husband and I have made a little tradition for ourselves, in that we try out one new recipe a week and then add it to our recipe rotation (if we like it, of course). I've never had so much variety in my life..way more than when I was a meat eater.

This past Sunday we tried this recipe and paired it up with some couscous left over from the night before.

Recipe in Here )

I just thought I'd share a picture in case anyone thinks of trying the recipe, as I love to have a visual before deciding to make something, but I'd definitely recommend trying this one out!

large scale compostin
I teach at a middle school in RRISD, but it is located in North Austin.  Some other teachers and I are extremely interested in starting a cafeteria composting program with the kids.  We are hoping to get grant money to pay for all the supplies and materials needed.  Most of us have personal composting experience, but we are doing some research on composting on a much larger scale.

So, I am looking for resources/ideas.  Is anyone else doing this in town?  Know of any "compost experts" who might want to come speak to/demonstrate for middle schoolers?  Ideas for where to buy the things we would need (bins, worms, etc) that are cheap/would cut us a deal since it's for school?

Also, my prinicipal is concerned that there might be restrictions with the composting due to health issues/rodents.  She asked us to make sure that we are "allowed" to compost before we write the grant.  Where would I find out about any such restrictions?  I don't believe my school is in the city limits of either Round Rock or Austin, so I'm not sure who is "in charge" of us.

Any ideas, suggestions, thoughts, concerns would be great.  We're really excited to get this project off the ground but we want to think it through thoroughyl and troubleshoot any potential problems beforehand.

Thanks!

EEEEEE she posted it!

I don't even watch Dr. Who and I love the living hell out of this vid. People who would actually know what they're looking at need to watch this. It was the one I was thinking of all through the Martha panel at Wiscon.

I want to KILL the Stomach BUG!
Okay, I need some serious help, in more ways than one.

I am emetophobic and on top of that, germaphobic.

To make things even more interesting, I have been TRYING to get away from hideous stuff like bleach and antibacterial products.

The dilemma-there's a stomach bug going around my locale and my daughter's got it. I am trying to stifle the urge to Pine-Sol and bleach everything to death. Boiling everything isn't really an option either, we are talking clothing, toys, sheets, doorknobs.

I am in a panic because I don't want to spread the joy (or let it linger around my house).

Any ideas or should I bleach the crap (pardon the pun) out of everything?? I want to go natural, but I am freaking out here.

Would appreciate any ideas you guys might have...

that last post didn't go anywhere so lets try another
I have a friend who refuses to let her daughter wear anything but dresses.  She won't buy her pants or shorts even if the daughter asks for them.  The friend says she wants the daughter to be feminine so she is training her early.  After my daughter hung out with this person she also became obsessed with dresses, and now will not wear anything but dresses either.  She is 3.

Should this concern me?  What do you think of the friends choice of demanding her daughter dress feminine?

The Telling of Birth Stories
Have you ever noticed that non-natural hospital birth stories usually seem to be written as a timeline of events, like "Then they checked me, then I got an epidural, then something else," whereas natural birth stories tend to focus more on thoughts and feelings? Just pondering today. I just read a short non-natural birth story and thought, "That's not much of a birth story," because it was just one event after another, with none of the mom's thoughts or feelings. Maybe it was just how SHE wrote it, but I have noticed the difference in the way the stories are told, especially in unassisted births when there is no one telling the mom what to do, so it's understandable that those birth stories would be filled out more with what they're feeling, rather than what someone is telling them. Anyway, it doesn't matter either way, but I'm just feeling pensive so there you have it.

DEBATE:

What do you think causes anorexia?  Do you think limiting your childs exposure to media will help prevent anorexia?
What do you do to prevent your own children from developing a complex about their bodies?

Lentil tacos; baked brown rice

I was craving something--anything--wrapped in a corn tortilla. Usually my brother likes tacos with soy crumbles, but I don't like the taste. Beans are always good, but I wanted to try something different: lentil tacos.

I googled and found this (non vegan) recipe, changed a few things around, and ended up with this.

I used red lentils because they're smaller. That means that they cook faster, and more closely approximate the texture of taco filling. But you could easily use regular lentils--just cook it longer.

Also, Alton Brown has an awesome way of cooking brown rice: baking it! Usually I use a rice cooker, but when I don't I have a hard time making it non-soggy on the stove (plus it always sticks to the pan.) This way the texture is great, you can ignore it for an hour, and you don't have to worry about scrubbing the pan. Here's the recipe.
